Gorillaz aren't your typical band, and that's the whole point. Created in 1998 by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett, the project is fronted by four animated characters, 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs, who exist in their own cartoon universe. Behind the artwork, it's one of the most genuinely inventive musical projects of the last few decades.
What makes Gorillaz special is how freely the music moves. Albarn uses the animated set-up as a blank canvas, pulling in hip-hop, electronic, dub, pop and rock and collaborating with a huge cast of artists across every record. The result is a sound that never sits still, from the self-titled debut through Demon Days, Plastic Beach and beyond.
The hits speak for themselves. "Clint Eastwood," "Feel Good Inc.," "On Melancholy Hill" and "DARE" have racked up billions of streams and turned the band into a global phenomenon, all without a single "real" member ever needing to step into the spotlight. Hewlett's striking visual world is as much a part of the appeal as the music itself.
That bold artwork is exactly what makes Gorillaz t-shirts so good. Our designs draw on the band's unmistakable character art, album covers and iconic imagery, all officially licensed and printed on quality cotton.
