Korn kicked the door open for an entire genre. Formed in Bakersfield, California in 1993, the band fused down-tuned, seven-string heaviness with hip-hop groove and raw emotional pain, and in doing so more or less invented nu-metal. Nothing on the radio sounded like them when they arrived, and a whole wave of bands rushed to follow.
At the heart of it all is frontman Jonathan Davis, whose lyrics dragged dark, deeply personal subject matter into the spotlight and gave the music its unsettling, cathartic edge. Backed by the dual-guitar crunch of Head and Munky and one of the most distinctive rhythm sections in heavy music, Korn built a sound that was as crushing as it was strangely melodic.
Their 1994 self-titled debut became a nu-metal landmark, and Follow the Leader (1998) blew them up worldwide on the back of tracks like "Freak on a Leash" and "Got the Life." Decades and many albums later, they're still a major force, and that instantly recognisable Korn logo, with its scratchy backwards "R," has become one of the most iconic in all of metal.
