Mastodon are one of modern metal's most ambitious and inventive bands. Formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000, the four-piece carved out a sound all their own, blending the heaviness of sludge and progressive metal with intricate musicianship and a genuine sense of adventure. Right from the start, they were clearly aiming higher than the average riff-and-shout metal band.
What sets them apart is their scope. Mastodon built whole albums around big, sweeping concepts, most famously Leviathan (2004), their Moby-Dick-inspired masterpiece, and Crack the Skye (2009), a sprawling, prog-soaked epic. Three of the four members trade off vocals, and Brann Dailor's wildly inventive drumming has become one of the most admired in the genre.
Over the years they've picked up a Grammy, toured the world and earned a reputation as a band that refuses to repeat itself. Just as striking is their visual identity, the rich, surreal album artwork that has become as much a part of Mastodon's appeal as the music itself.
