KISS were never just a band, they were an event. Formed in New York City in 1973, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss took rock and roll and turned it into pure spectacle, the face paint, the towering boots, the fire, the blood, the explosions. Four larger-than-life characters, The Starchild, The Demon, The Spaceman and The Catman, who looked like nothing else on earth.
Behind all the theatre were the songs. "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Detroit Rock City," the surprise ballad "Beth" and the disco-tinged smash "I Was Made for Lovin' You" turned them into one of the biggest live draws on the planet, "The Hottest Band in the World," as the announcer still bellows before every show.
That over-the-top devotion runs both ways. The KISS Army, one of the most fiercely loyal fanbases in music, helped power the band through five decades, countless lineup changes and one of the most relentless merchandising empires rock has ever seen. Through it all, Stanley and Simmons kept the whole circus rolling.
