Joy Division burned bright and brief, yet few bands have left a longer shadow. Formed in Salford near Manchester in 1976 in the wake of punk, the four-piece of Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris built something colder, deeper and more haunting than the scene that spawned them, and post-punk was never the same after.
Their sound was unmistakable: Hook's high, melodic basslines, Morris's machine-like drumming, stark guitars and Curtis's deep, mournful baritone delivering some of the most quietly devastating lyrics in rock. Drawing on punk's energy and the hypnotic pulse of German krautrock, they made music that felt genuinely new, and still does.
They left behind just two studio albums, Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980), both now regarded as post-punk landmarks. Ian Curtis died in 1980, bringing the band to an end at the very moment they were breaking through. The surviving members went on to form New Order and helped shape the sound of the decade that followed.
